Contact Lens Related Corneal Ulcer Surveillance
Corneal ulcer or
infective keratitis can result in devastating visual outcome,
from dense corneal scar to endophthalmitis, panophthalmitis, and
even evisceration. Wearing contact lens is itself a risk factor
of corneal ulcer. The outbreak of contact lens related corneal
ulcer in 2006 in Singapore, Hong Kong and USA, associated to
contact lens cleaning solution, has emphasized the importance of
keeping an active surveillance on contact lens related eye
problem, especially the most severe complication i.e. corneal
ulcer. During the recent outbreak in 2006, MOH Malaysia has
formed a task force to monitor the situation. One of its
functions was to establish an active surveillance. Doctors were
required to notify MOH patients with suspected contact lens
related corneal ulcer under their care. The notification forms
were to be faxed to the Eye Bank based at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.
With the establishment of NED website in 2007, all clinicians
should notify through web application as it will be more
effective and a faster means to monitor this problem.
Data collected include demography, types of contact lens and
cleaning solution used, wearing pattern, causative organism, and
treatment outcome after one month
Objectives
1. |
To detect outbreak of contact lens related corneal
ulcer |
2. |
To determine pattern of causative organism of
corneal ulcer |
3. |
To study the characteristics of patients in terms of
demography, risk factors and contact lens type and
wearing patterns |
4. |
To monitor the outcome of patients with contact lens
related corneal ulcer |
Participation
All patients who have been diagnosed to have contact lens
related corneal ulcer by any eye care providers should be
notified to MOH through this online notification. In centres
who do not have access to online notification, cases should
be notified using the notifying form as in appendix 1 and
fax to Hospital Kuala Lumpur Lions Eye Bank via Fax No: 03-
26925276.
